Q: How would you describe your design philosophy?
Ken Fulk: I tend to think sometimes I’m fearless. At its best, design can be heroic and inspired. Here, I chose to have 20-foot-tall bed and lion over it. I may never be able to live up to that lion.
Q: That bed almost looks like a fortress.
Ken Fulk: Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve always been enamored with the idea of these great European curtained beds that always seemed magical. But it’s also practical. I live in a giant loft, a 4,000-square-foot room with skylights everywhere, so there are no walls, no way of blocking out light. There’s something cocoon-y about it. That headboard is made from motorcycle leather. The building used to be an S+M leather factory, so I thought we should pay a little tribute to it. Only in San Francisco.
