A snowstorm and far (far) west location didn’t stop Legacy Records, the new Hudson Yards Mediterranean restaurant from the team behind Charlie Bird and Pasquale Jones, from being full up on its second night in business. Dedicated diners, or perhaps just those who live nearby, thronged the bar and tables within for a taste of the newest restaurant in town located at 517 West 38th St. between 10th and 11th avenues.
Legacy Records has gotten play far beyond the typical food publications; magazines such as Vogue and Architectural Digest are taking notice because of a certain person’s involvement: Ken Fulk, a San Francisco designer extraordinaire who’s known for his opulent, colorful, and sometimes wacky aesthetic and spare-no-expense style.
That point of view shows in the space here, where royal emerald green rules the rooms, smooth marble abounds, luxe gold takes over the ceiling and fixtures throughout, and rich mahogany grounds it all. To keep the vibes playful — and a little weird — art from people such as Mickalene Thomas lines the walls and a large, lively mural from artist Chris Lux takes over the upstairs bar, while hip hop blares from the speakers.
The restaurant is separated into three distinct areas, with a ground floor bar that functions as a cafe during the day, the ground floor dining room, and an upstairs private events space that will open as a separate cocktail and wine lounge later this month.
