Sun House

A London transplant and her tech-industry husband enlisted Ken Fulk Inc to create a surrealist fantasy for their weekend getaway in the rolling hills of the Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel, California. The clients are no strangers to high fashion or bold design, which gave the design team a rare opportunity to go all-in with an over-the-top concept, in this case: Alice in Wonderland meets Alexander McQueen. The process of overhauling what was a simple modern farmhouse began with embellishments throughout the interior architecture including detailed custom casework, ornamental latticework, tracery ceilings, inlaid stone floors and commissioned hand- painted surface treatments. With references to a traditional English country house, the interiors were then layered with a combination of bright colors, intricate textures and patterns that reflected the couture fashion sense of the homeowners. Finally, touches of hand-crafted whimsy in bespoke lighting and furnishings as well as eye-catching artworks were added for a dose of the unexpected at every turn. The result is a weekend house for a family of four that is a mere 40 minutes from their full-time residence, but for the clients feels like a magical new realm that’s a world away.
